Bound in half maroon leather over maroon cloth; spine in raised bands with contrasting green title label, gilt. All edges red. Extremities worn with loss at head and tail of spine and front hinge starting to crack back board detached. Fly leaves browned and spotted, but otherwise a very good clean copy. Armourial bookplate of Viscount Birkenhead and ownership stamps and signatures of Mr. F. E. Smith on first and second free endpapers and at head of title. Occasional ink underlinings, etc. Loosely inset: Death at Sea By Harold Nicholson, review of The Veronica Trial, photocopy of cutting from The Observer August 31 1953. A title from the library of Viscount Birkenhead (1872-1930), formerly F. E. Smith, the famous barrister and later Conservative MP and Lord Chancellor. Smith was one of the prosecuting barristers in this case, being instructed by the Treasury to appear for the Crown. Four members of the Crew of the barque Veronica were found guilty of murdering their captain and other members of the crew, of seizing the vessel which was an act of piracy, and setting her on fire. The crew of the Brunswick rescued them off the island of Cajueira Tutoia, Brazil, but on the voyage home became suspicious because their story had numerous discrepancies. They were arrested on arrival at Liverpool and at the end of the trial three of them were sentenced to death and subsequently hanged at Walton Jail.
