Norwegian, about the Nazi occupation of Norway in woodblock illustrations. Printed in Norway with Norwegian text, at the end of WWII. Condition; Original decorative hardback binding and spine in Black & Maroon with title to spine, mostly very good, some rubbing. 2 corner knocks, corner loss of colour front. Contents Very good clean & tight, no inscriptions, Vibrant Black & Maroon illustrated endpages front & rear. Below title opposite each illustration is mostly a nazi helmet, throwing grenade, barbed wire, swastika etc. Albert Jærn (1893?1949) was a Norwegian designer and book illustrator. This is from his excerpts from his secret diary over five years, Albert Jærn captures in words and woodcuts the atrocities and indignities Norwegians witnessed during their country?s five-year-long occupation by Hitler?s forces from 1940 to 1945. Jærn favoured block cuts of wood or linoleum. In simplified lines and surfaces, free of affectation or exaggeration, he captured the point he wished to communicate and managed to make something new each time. Published his diary in the hope that his countrymen would never forget their ordeal. He wanted Norwegians to remember their own confusion and fear as well as the enemies? tyranny and oppression. He stated that this book is about me during the war years but hoped that the younger generation will find something that they will always remember about the tyranny and oppression.
