First published in 1644 (the first six satires only) and then complete in 1647, with another edition following in 1660. This is the vigorous and well-annotated translation of Juvenal by the royalist poet and dramatist Sir Robert Stapylton (1605?-69). Wing J1292. This is one of the earliest publications of Thomas Guy (d. 1724), founder of Guy's Hospital and benefactor of St Thomas's Hospital. He had become a bookseller in 1668, but his fortune was made through trading South Sea stock. 8vo, (xx) 246pp (last blank) 2 pp adverts, engraved portrait frontispiece and additional title page, all edges stained green. Original sheep boards quite rubbed at corners, nicely rebacked in brown calf with red & gilt title label, slt. rubbed. A very pleasant copy. Seller Inventory # 7547
