About this Item
Manuscript pocketbook. 12mo. Completely filled out with 40pp. of manuscript entries in ink and pencil, and on the inside of both covers. Brown leather flexible card covers, titled in manuscript on front cover: "Jos. Watson s Bar Book, May 16th, 1859". Very good or better. A tavern owner s pocket tab or tally of drinks consumed by several patrons, including a record of rum, whisky, and gin purchased by the bottle or gallon. Most entries date from May through July, and are crossed out presumably when paid. One entry identifies the location of the tavern as being at Marbledale, Connecticut. Among the open entries (not crossed out) is a full-page record listing one Albert Anson s purchases of several gallons of rum and whiskey. Beer, gin, and numerous unspecified "drinks" fill out the book. Records exist of a liquor license for "Joseph Watson of Marbledale, Conn., due to expire Oct. 9th, 1873" which indicates that Watson s tavern was a popular drinking establishment throughout the mid-19th century. A two-page entry for one Hiram Bissell includes expenditures for labor and supplies, and a few entries indicate that Watson was also in the business of providing "headstones" for his clientele. An uncommon bar book that opens a window into the social history of a small antebellum village in Connecticut. Seller Inventory # 560137
