About this Item
Map. Engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 13 x 20.5". This map of the Roman Empire at its greatest extent is a fascinating mixture of old and new. Prominently labeled in Latin as to complement its ancient subject matter, it also includes modern labels in smaller text and is divided along modern political boundaries. The map spans the entirety of Europe, as well as parts of North Africa, Asia and Persia. Insets in the upper right corner depict Greece and Italy, with smaller insets showing the region around Rome and Campania. The map features a strapwork border that corresponds to Johnson's work of the early 1860s. Features the strapwork style border common to Johnson's atlas work from 1860 to 1863. The map appeared as plates 96-97 in the 1863 edition of "Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas," which was the first edition published under the name of Johnson and Ward. The map is in very good condition with full margins as issued. Overall toning and very minor foxing and wear to edges. Alvin Jewett Johnson (1827-1884) was one of the most prolific American publishers of the 19th century. He opened his own company in 1856 that produced atlases, maps and encyclopedias. The company made great maps based on those by J.H. Colton and Johnson produced a newly updated version every year up until the late 19th century. This fascinating map typifies he creativity that earned him his success. Seller Inventory # 305264
