About this Item
A large 10.5" x 14.25" original watercolour and wash drawing of a bridge and canal under construction (Grand Union Canal) at Cassiobury. The Cassiobury location was inscribed on the reverse of the adjoining sheet in a small folio of Nates' drawings. On white wove J. Whatman paper (from a small group of drawings by Nattes, all on similar paper, some of which bear the J. Whatman watermark and date 1832). Nattes exhibited at the R.A. from 1782 and was a founder member of 'The Old Watercolour Society'. A superb watercolour in perfect condition recording a time of seminal change in English transport. Mounted on museum board. Nattes work is represented in the British Museum, the V&A and other public collections. Nattes died in 1839 not 1822 as mistakenly recorded in some reference works.
