Size 6.0 x 8.5 inches. In dark green pictorial cloth covers with gilt to spine and front. With gilt vignette to front. In fair condition. Rubbed on edges, corners a little bumped. Split to lower back edge of spine. Corners slightly bumped. Mild foxing to edges. New front endpaper. Frontis a little rubbed on edges, faint mark & light corner crease, tissue guard has had Jock neatly traced by pencil. A few other light handling marks. Last text page between 474-475 has had old crude glue repair on inner hinge. Else a clean and tight copy. 475pp Colour frontis of "Jock", & many b/w plates by E.Caldwell. Each page has several small b/w line drawings. 1st issue with drawings of a dung beetle pushing his load with his front legs rather than his back on pages 65. 337, & 457. First edition of a legendary book. A true story, the book tells of Fitzpatrick's travels with his dog, Jock, during the 1880s, when he worked as a storeman, prospector's assistant, journalist and ox-wagon transport-rider in the Bushveld region of the Transvaal (then the South African Republic). This is one of the sought-after 1st issue Editions with the Beetle (dung beetle) incorrectly depicted as rolling the ball with its front legs - this was changed in later editions. (pg.65).
