Travel throughout Japan for 2 full months (May-June) in 1911. This educated European (who also spoke English) attempts in long weekly letters to tell of everything seen and experienced. The conversational informal style adds charm to his discourses on teahouses, guesthouses, houses, gardens, cities, countryside, people, art, theater, festivals, transportation, etc. Many personal stories, a few European prejudices, the occasional pejorative term, and bemoaning of the westernization of Japan. An uncommon travel narrative, with a valuable perspective. Orig. printed wraps, with small tears on edges, worn on covers and with some soil. Spine repaired with transparent tape.
