About this Item
oblong folio, fifty hand-coloured albumen plates of Japanese scenes, each 8 x 10 1/4 inches, bound concertina style in lacquered boards, the front depicting quails on a black ground with gold grasses, one bird in overlaid, coloured, bone, the back board with butterflies and a grasshopper, these chipped around edges, scratched and rubbed, boards now detached, leaves with pale foxing on the mounts but photographs largely untouched, each with a tissue guard (that of the first plate missing), these also foxed, with tears and creases, most photographs with a printed label identifying the scene. These albums rarely have a photographer's or publisher's name to them and the few that are dated through inscriptions seem to be c.1890, a date that the scenes themselves would corroborate.
