Some rubbing to boards and wear to bottom edges. Small ink stamp on front free endpaper, title page, and last page. Foxing and thumbing is mainly to endpapers. Because of his diplomatic position, he was able to travel beyond the barriers of the foreign enclave at Yokohama, a privilege accorded exclusively to diplomats. Embellished by sketches done while travelling. A wonderful insight into nineteenth-century Japan before the influence of foreign powers. Seller Inventory # 125582
