Towns, rivers, lakes, and mountains are noted. William Home Lizars (1788--1859) was an engraver and painter based in Edinburgh. After the death of father, Daniel Lazars, he took up the family engraving business and expanded into etching and copperplate printing. This lovely map is a fine example of his work. Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. Illustrated by William H. Lizars (illustrator). Four volume set, The Naturalist's Library: Ornithology - Birds of Great Britain and Ireland, is in good condition, complete with all full-page hand-colored engravings by William Home Lizars. Volumes have red cloth covered boards with blind-stamped borders with gilt-stamped flourish on the front cover and gilt-stamped spines. Back covers are blind-stamped. All volumes have shelfworn covers that are chipping around the edges, bumped corners, soil markings, faded spines and dusty gilt-topped text blocks. They all have lightly toned pages inside, some small soil markings, some bumped or dogeared pages and very faint signs of foxing. Volumes I-III have cracked hinges. But they are all complete, collectible books for birders. Each volume is illustrated with very fine color and black and white engravings and include a fontispiece portait and tribute to a different Scottish naturalist. The engravings are so detailed that they are often sold individually. The 7th Baronet of Applegarth, Sir William Jardine, was a Scottish ornithologist who helped popularize natural history in Victorian society with his well-received books. He was also known as an avid outdoorsman and for his library and personal natural history collection, which were said to be the finest in Britain at the time.
