xxi, [3], 216pp. Large paper copy. Partially unopened in original publisher's pebbled brown cloth. Backstrip detached, boards sunned and a trifle rubbed. Hinges exposed, inked ownership inscription of J. T. Coleridge to recto of FFEP, foxed throughout. Presentation copy, inked inscription to head of title page: 'To Mr. Justice Coleridge with the author's respects'. An early edition of writer, judge, and politician Sir Thomas Noon Talfourd's (1795-1854) blank verse tragedy. First performed at Covent Garden Theatre to a distinguished audience of contemporary reviewers that included Charles Dickens and Robert Browning, the play was received to great critical and commercial acclaim. Such was the popularity of the piece it ran through two private and four public editions by 1837, just three years after its first appearance. John Taylor Coleridge (1790-1876), nephew of the Romantic poet, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, judge, and sometime editor of the Quarterly Review. Size: 8vo. Seller Inventory # AQ26067
