About this Item
Details an ingenious system of representing Mandarin Chinese, both by brush and in braille, created by missionaries working in China in the late 19th century. The author claims that, by using their system, Chinese may learn to read and write in four months or less, compared with the several years required to master basic Chinese idiographic script. As it is based on a simple numerical code it was effective for the teaching of both the blind and the illiterate. Aside from providing complete details of the system, the book is filled with fascinating vignettes of the lives of both foreign missionaries and the common people of China through a particularly troubled period of its history. xii, 189 pp., 24 b&w illustrations and tables, incl. a plan of Peking. Bright yellow decorative boards with minor scuffing and soiling, back board creased, internally clean and bright. RARE. First published in 1898, this is a second edition. Taylor 374. Plus, tipped into the rear - "The Fourteenth Annual Report of the Mission to the Chinese Blind for the Year 1900"; Glasgow 1901 -- a 28 p. report in wrappers by Gordon-Cumming. Size: 18.5 x 12 cm.
