Stated second edition with charts. Original brown cloth boards with gilt imprint have rubbed and bumped edges and corners and scratches across the boards. Spine ends worn off, sunning and fraying on spine, front board starting. Light soil, creasing and toning on pages and a few tears and chips on endpapers. The front endpapers have the signature of N. H. Winchell, dated 1882, with Winchell's stamp on the front pastedown. Newton Horace Winchell was a geologist who accompanied Custer's Black Hills expedition in 1874 and produced a multi-volume work on Minnesota's geology. At the rear is a pocket with four kinship charts.
