About this Item
Fine in a Very Good+ dustjacket. Bound in full black cloth. The spine is stamped in gilt. Octavo. 278pps. Stated first printing. There is mild bumping to the spine-ends, otherwise clean, tight, square, and bright. All tips are sharp. The text is immaculate; absolutely no reading wear and no previous ownership markings. The dustjacket, glossy in a mylar sleeve, has touches of rubbing, shallow chipping at the spine-ends, and a small, fully closed tear at the top of the front panel; the original price is intact. A very nice, collector's-quality copy of the author's first novel. Kennedy went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for 'Ironweed,' the third book in his Albany cycle. ".Ostensibly (and very, but only, ostensibly), this novel is about a newspaper strike in a medium-sized American city -- a strike of such long and futile duration that were the striking guildsmen to accept the latest offer of the paper's management they would be worse off than they were originally. The principal figure in this lusty, metaphysical comedy is Bailey, columnist of diminishing effect, buffoon of escalating proportions, cryptic aphorist, and chief antagonist of Stanley, the company's lawer-negotiator. The most animated of a handful of guild diehards, Bailey is determined to inflict just one significant defeat on the enemy. He concocts a scheme to bleed the paper's ink truck of its viscous cargo before the vehicle has reached the plant, fails in his attempt, and out of frustration sets fire to a shack housing a group of gypsies who have been employed as company thugs. The resulting immolation of the gypsy queen starts Bailey on a wild, circular journey that careens from the real to the surreal, from bizarre life to sensational fantasy -- above ground where the gypsies seek vengeance and below, in the subterranean stacks of the city library, where Bailey nearly loses himself in recorded, and unrecorded, history."
