Original gray paper covering with polished green paper boards exhbit loss of paper on rear board. Modestly soiling with light chipping to edges. Rubbing to extremities with minor scuffing to tips. Spine abraded with loss and insect damage. Worming to inner front hinge. May lack a frontis or a front fly leaf. Ink stain on title. Typically age-stained with light foxing throughout. Binding intact. Fragile. Please see photos. The first of 19 volumes printed from 1832 to 1835. Harriet Martineau (1802-1876) was an English social theorist often seen as the first female sociologist. She wrote from a sociological, holistic, religious and feminine angle, translated works by Auguste Comte, and, rarely for a woman writer at the time, earned enough to support herself.
