Colour wraps 17x23cm illustrated with Al-Idrisi's world map to the front and the Iraqi Republic's combined Stars of Ishtar and Shamash emblem to the back. Printed in Baghdad at the Surveys Press (for the maps) and Rabita Press (Commentaries). (2)pp prelims + 33 double-page spreads each featuring attractive colour pictorial maps and plans to the right and detailed explanatory texts to the left + (1)pp references. Wraps about very good with some wear and minor loss to spine. Interiors very good. This appears to be rare, with Worldcat and Jisc identifying 11 locations. Ahmed Sousa (1900-82) studied engineering at universities in Beirut and the US before returning to Iraq to join the Irrigation Department in 1930. By 1946 he was assistant to the head of the Irrigation Commission and during 1947-57 headed the Iraq Survey. His diverse interests in ancient Iraqi history, water, engineering, agriculture, and geography are reflected in this work, which describes Iraq from ancient to modern times. Maps and commentaries 1-9 cover history (Sumerian-Akkadian, Babylon, Assyrian, Muslim-Arab, Abbasid Caliphate, Round City of Al-Mansur, Mongols Persians and Turks, British occupation and the royal regime, the Republic); 10-16 geography (agriculture, population, mountains summer resorts and forests), rivers and lakes, communications, geology, oil); 17-32 administrative units each with details on area, population, boundaries, admin, HQ, summer resorts, agriculture, historical sites, springs, etc (Mosul, Sulaimaniya, Erbil, Kirkuk, Diyala, Ramadi, Baghdad, Baghdad City municipal boundary, Baghdad City historical sites, Kut, Hilla, Karbala, Diwaniya, Amara, Nasiriya, and Basra); and 33 the Arab World.
