Apud Joannem Blaev, Amstelaedami, 1670, frontis portrait of Grotius, illustrated title, printer s devices, illustrated initials, 8.25 x 5.25 , 8vo. In fair condition. Front board detached. Moderate wear to extremities with scuffing to edges and corners. Corners rubbed with board exposed. Red rot at edges and joints. Stamped paneled boards with lovely filigree. Double ruled edges. Spine perished with heavy creasing and loss at head and tail. Spine label is cracked down center. Numerous flaws to surface of leather. Old hand price on fly and pastedown at center. Fly is chipped at edge. Internally good with light toning and minor instances of foxing. Some instances of minor age staining. Free of known marginalia. Binding intact. Please see photos. Scarce work of Hugo Grotius (1583-1645) Dutch humanist, diplomat, lawyer, theologian, jurist, poet and playwright. He was imprisoned exiled for his involvement in the intra-Calvinist disputes of the Dutch Republic and wrote his major works while in France.
