About this Item
Copper engraved portrait of Gaine within an ornate oval frame with banner "The New York Mercury", and seated young woman reading a large volume below the portrait. Part of a collection by the Society of Iconophiles, Series III, Six Portraits Engraved by Francis S. King after a portrait by Gilbert Stuart. The Society of Iconophiles was formed in 1894 by William L. Andrews (1837-1920), "in search of the historical and picturesque" in order to preserve the historical heritage of the city of New York. 8 1/2 x 12 1/2", wide full margins, paper 13 1/2 x 18 1/2".
