This is a beautifully illustrated, Civil War Era copy of "The Hudson Legends" of Washington Irving containing the classic stories "RIP VAN WINKLE - A Legend of the Kaatskill Mountains" and "THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW." 1864 1st edition thus; G.P. Putnam; New York. At the back of the book is a section titled "Postscript Found in the Handwriting of Mr. Knickerbocker." The book features wonderful illustrations throughout by "eminent artists," including F.O.C. Darley (considered by many to be the "Father of American Illustration"). Gilt lettering and borders on the covers, and gilt page edges on all sides of the text block. Scarce 1st/thus copy of this collection of Irving's two most iconic works. Condition: Light soiling to the covers. There is a small, light stain and a bit of bubbling beneath the cloth near the top of the front cover. Cloth tears at the cover corners. The left edge of the spine has a couple of 1" cloth tears. There are cloth tears at the top and bottom edges of the spine. Tight binding with no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. Bright gilt page edges on all sides of the text block. Nice interior - the pages are lightly age-toned with occasional light foxing (though heavier on the back of the frontispiece) and a random smudge here and there. There is an inscription written in pencil dated 1865 on the front end paper. Overall the book is in Good+ condition. Seller Inventory # ABE-1725044350026
