About this Item
With Illustrations. 1894 on the title page. This is not an uncommon book. It has been reprinted many times. However, the copy I have for sale is so nice-looking (take a look at the photos) and in such nice condition that I think it may be of interest. As you can see from the photos, the covers have only minimal wear, just a tiny bit of rubbing at the corners, crinkling at the spine ends, a bit of rippling just below the word Poets on the spine. There's also a spot of discoloration the rear cover, as well as a few surface scratches there. All three page edges are gilt. The gilt is very bright and in very good shape. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover. No binding issues. There are 642 pages followed by a few unnumbered ones. The pages are exceptionally clean. I've scrolled through several times and found only two pages with few a spots off their outer edge far from the print. I didn't see any creasing or dogeared corners on any of the pages. I did find one bottom edge of a page that was cut just a little bit long in one spot and the extra paper was folded into the book. There was just a tiny tear there as well. There are no markings anywhere in the book. There is a very nice white bookplate of the previous owner (an Alice Wright) on the front inside cover (there's also a tiny loss at the bottom corner of the front inside cover, but there are two layers of paper so you are just seeing a slightly different hue below the loss). I'll provide a photo of this page. Across from the front inside cover on the front end paper Ms. Wright has signed her name and the year1901 next to it. However, below that she wrote 'Sept 1900.' There are no other attachments to be found anywhere in the book. And there is no other writing to be found anywhere else in the book. Amongst the poets whose homes are described are Chaucer, Spenser, Shakespeare, Milton, Dryden, Pope, Swift, Shenstone, Keats, Shelley, Byron, Hogg, Coleridge, and Wordsworth.
