About this Item
Tall 4to. Hardcover. Two volumes bound in one book. Volume One pp. 85. Vol 2. pp. 36. In very good condition; half-leather binding over cloth boards; marbled end-paper and gilt fore-edge. Raised bands on spine with gilt decoration and title. Front board is starting to detach from the spine, though binding still remains tight. Slight shelf-wear to the cover, including wear along the edges and corners; cracking in the leather around the spine, and other minor scuffs and small stains. Pages themselves are clean and unmarked with light foxing. Complete with 120 tinted lithograph plates by David Roberts. One plate is slightly torn at the bottom but without obstructing the image (Jacob's Well at Shechem, Vol 1 p.38). George Croly was an Irish poet, novelist, historian, and Anglican priest. He was rector of St Stephen Walbrook in the City of London from 1835 until his death. He was a well-known contributor to The Literally Gazette, was engaged to write the text from Roberts journal. Exhibitions of the original drawings were opened in London in 1840. They created a considerable stir and drew great praise from Ruskin. The exhibition catalogue also served as a prospectus for the projected work. David Roberts RA was a Scottish painter. He is especially known for The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia, a prolific series of detailed lithograph prints of Egypt and the Near East that he produced from sketches he made during long tours of the region (18381840). These and his large oil paintings of similar subjects made him a prominent Orientalist painter. He was elected as a Royal Academician in 1841. This is a heavy item so may incur higher postage rates.
