About this Item
159 pages. 22 x 14 cm. Several black and white photographs. First Edition (Unstated). The achievements of German Jewry were clouded by assimilation. Largely as an antithesis to these tendencies, a militant "Orthodoxy" arose among German Jewry, determined to uphold the ancient Hebrew laws and to fight for an enlightened but uncompromising Judaism. Hermann Schwab's history deals with the period from the 1830s up to the time of the annihilation of the Jewish community in Germany. Translated into English from the German by Irene R. Birnbaum. Includes an Index. "In his native Frankfort Schwab early came under the influence of S. R. Hirsch. He was employed for many years in the Hirsch metal enterprises near Berlin, and in Halberstadt. From 1927 he ran a press service in Berlin which he continued after emigrating to England in 1934. A supporter of Agudat Israel and its founder, Jacob Rosenheim, Schwab during World War I organized its war orphans' fund, which established a number of orphanages in Poland. In London, he became president of the Golders Green Beth Hamidrash. "(EJ). Seller Inventory # 005894
