This is an antique copy of the "Minor Wars of the United States - A History of the French War, Ending in the Conquest of Canada, with a Preliminary Account of the Early Attempts at Colonization and Struggles for the Possession of the Continent" by Rossiter Johnson. 1882; Dodd, Mead & Company; New York. The book features three double-page illustrations, and one full-page illustration. From the Preface: "The history of the struggle between the Gaul and the Briton for possession of North America, though in form a straggling story, stretching over two centuries, offers one of the most interesting studies of national character and destiny. A knowledge of this is absolutely necessary to any intelligent study of the subsequent history of our country. The part played by the red man should not be overlooked. Bloody and terrible it was to the vanquished soldier, thrice bloody and hideous to the settler and his little family; but though it prolonged and embittered the struggle, it had no real effect upon the result. In the earlier wars on this continent, the tomahawk and scalping-knife were enlisted mainly in the service of the French against the British; but the Briton conquered the Frenchman nevertheless. In later wars, the same savage weapons in savage hands were wielded for the English against the Americans; but the American conquered the Englishman. There is no more important lesson to teach the youth who must be our future soldiers and commanders than this ,that in the warfare of nations the exercise of cruelty has never secured the ultimate victory. The power that only tortures and murders cannot become even a balance of power when two races are in conflict for precedence, or two opposite ideas for survival. Civilization must fight out its own battles." Condition: There is a bit of light soiling and scratching to the cloth on the back cover. Sharp cover corners. Small cloth tear at the top-left corner of the spine. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. The text pages are in nice condition - clean with no notable issues found. Ex-library with a label affixed to the spine, "Bowdoin College Library Withdrawn" label affixed to front pastedown, small sticker affixed to top-left corner of front pastedown, embossed stamp on title page, ID # written in pencil on copyright page, and a checkout slip affixed to rear pastedown (a shadow tanned outline of the slip appears on the facing end paper).
