About this Item
GORDON, THOMAS F. The History of New Jersey, from its Discovery by Europeans, to the Adoption of the Federal Constitution. Trenton, 1834. xii, 339 p. [Bound with:] A Gazetteer of the State of New Jersey, Comprehending a General View of its Physical and Moral Condition, Together with a Topographical and Statistical Account of its Counties, Towns, Villages, Canals, Rail Roads, &c. Trenton, 1834. iv, 266 p. Handcolored folding map (very skillfully and unobtrusively repaired on the verso). Contemporary sheep (light scuffs at the extremities but very tight). Text foxed, as with all copies of this book. A very desirable copy. The second history of New Jersey, bound with, as issued, the first gazetteer of the state. The latter is an essential reference tool for locating early towns and communities, and it remained the only gazetteer of New Jersey for almost fifty years. This is one of the cornerstone New Jersey books, and copies are usually found without the map and in dry, lifeless bindings. This copy is unusually nice and tight. For a lengthy study of this important book, see Felcone, New Jersey Books (2nd edn.), 768-769. Seller Inventory # 14813
