"Hints on the Game of Golf" is a significant book in the library of golf for two primary reasons. It is the first book written by Horace Hutchinson, a monumental figure in golf both for his playing prowess and his writing ability. Notably, Hutchinson was the first English Captain of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club, St. Andrews. He won the Amateur Championship in 1886 and 1887 and finished in the top ten three times in the Open Championship. He authored more than a dozen golf books, countless golf articles, and dozens of books on a wide variety of subjects. Most importantly, this is the first book of golf instruction offered for public sale, the scant earlier writings on the matter having been printed for private distribution. It is approximately the twentieth book on golf published. The publisher, William Blackwood, was a friend of Hutchinson, and it is thought by bibliophiles that the first edition production run was most likely limited to 1000 copies or less. The need and success of this book can be inferred by its long production run of fourteen editions including several revisions over twenty years. In a self-deprecating manner, Hutchinson would later write in his autobiography "The only excuse to be made for it is that it was a very little one." This eleventh edition contains the Prefaces for both the third and fifth editions. Blue decorative cloth in very good condition. Owner name ffep, no bookplate.
