About this Item
No date. (2), x, 251, (5) pages. Frontispiece + 16 leaves of Illustrations. Original publisher's blue ribbed cloth, spine lettered gilt. With sixteen full page black and white illustrations by Beatrice Elvery. *** The author states that "The stories are founded on legends mainly derived from Silva Gadelica and the Transactions of the Ossianic Society. I am indebted to Mr. Standish O'Grady's Critical and Philosophical History.' This is one of a number of special presentation copies with the printed inscription "FINN VARRA MAA - The promoters of Finn Varra Maa present a copy of this book to each of the children who took the part of the fairies in the first production in the Theatre Royal, Dublin, from St. Stephen's Day, 1917, to 19th January, 1918. They hope that these stories of Finn as a man and a chieftain in ancient Ireland will help to kindle in some and to keep lighting in others a proud interest in the tradition and history of our country." This would appear to be a 1918 variant re-issue of the sheets of the 1913 Dublin first edition, without the three coloured plates and with the original coloured frontispiece replaced by an photo-illustration of the cast of "Finn Vara Marr", posing on stage. *** A near fine copy of this rare variant without any damage, library stamps, inscriptions or other markings.
