About this Item
War-time Edition: Original paper covered coloured illustrated boards, 10.25 x 7.5 x 1.5 inches approx. , title to front board is slightly raised to make it stand out, it is red, the pasted on coloured picture looks like a ship on fire on the ocean, blue cloth spine with titles in cream and a illustration of a sailor underneath in black and cream, bright and clean, picture to spine slightly faded and shows a lighthouse, some minor edge wear , corners rubbed some general wear but for its age and use this book is in very good condition, some foxing to closed page edges, no inscriptions or marks, tissue protected coloured frontispiece 'Hand over your revolver he said, ' the Title Page is in beige and brown and gives a selection of the contributers, reverse side of title page and Contents, List of Coloured Illustrations and List of black and white illustrations are decoratively highlighted in beige and brown with battle illustrations The book opens with a preface by Herbert Strang 'The Great Rally' which sets the scene around the Great War which had begun since the last Annual had been produced, he acknowledges that many readers of the previous year's annual may already have taken up arms and some had already laid down their young lives. Strang holds those 'who do noble deeds' by going into action in respect and admiration. He states that 'nothing has been more remarkable , more inspiring than the rally of the youth of the Empire in these fateful days. ' He has no good words for the Germans and he is clearly encouraging the young lads to join in the fight to beat the enemy. The first article is this volume is entitled 'For France The Tale of the Great Retreat' by Captain Charles Gilson, 8 full colour plates but one of these is missing it should be adjacent to page 40, 'A dual in the Air by Cyrus Cuneo, ' is not included, 12 stories and articles by different authors, 208 pages followed by 8 pages of publishers advertisements. Numerous black and white illustrations, including diagrams and sketches. This is particularly a poignant Annual since it was published just after the First World War began 1914, too many young boys of these times would go on to lose their lives in this dreadful conflict. A War that many people believed would be over 'by Christmas. ' It was not , when this Annual appeared it was the first of too many Christmases at war. Here in their Annual, boys would have started to be told what was happening and what was expected. This Annual hasd been popular for many years so it would have been a boys 'must have' present and although poorer families would probably not have seen it, this would have been part of many many young boys' lives.
