Soiled boards with dampness staining and numerous smudges. Moderate wear to extremities with scuffing to edges and end bands. Spines abraded with loss of cloth at joints. Darkened spines from oxidation, chipped paper spine labels. 136 written on a sticker posted on the pastedowns. Lacks leaf after tip-in in both volumes. Second fly leaf is torn in volume II. Interior lightly toned with scattered foxing. Free of known marginalia. Bindings remain intact. Please see photos. Scarce. George Payne Rainsford James (1799-1860), was an English novelist and historical writer, the son of a physician in London. He was for many years British Consul at various places in the United States and on the Continent.
