"This 6.0 x 8.625 inch, 416 page hardcover book with jacket is the first printing of this title as shown by the 1942 date on the title page corresponding with the 1942 date on the copyright page. The dark maroon cloth covers show very little shelf or time wear. The corners are still sharp and unworn and the front panel black design and the spine gilt lettering and design work is clean and bright. There is one small gouge into the first signature on the lower fore edge but this is barely noticeable. The interior shows a previous owners inked name dated "January 1943" but beyond that the text pages are clean and crisp and the black-and-white illustrations and paintings are all present and vivid. The dust wrapper is in only fair condition. The paper used for the wrapper has become brittle and there are chips and tears along the edges and folds and one large three-inch tear along a spine fold, and two three-quarter inch chance of wrapper missing from the spine folds. At some point two of the folds in the dust wrapper separated but were taped back together and are still as such. Also at some point a previous owner must have trimmed the edges of the dust wrapper for whatever reason as now the wrapper is short of covering the book at the top and bottom by about a quarter of an inch. (See pix ) The wrapper is now protected by a mylar cover. The book features the story of two American women traveling to the islands of the South Pacific with the hope of portraying native life and the book does that and features the author's striking portraits of natives. 416 pages.".
