About this Item
1885. Third edition. vii, 272pp., a frontispiece portrait of the author, 16 plans and etchings, a large linen folding map, and 137 woodcuts. John Collingwood Bruce (1805-1892) was an English nonconformist minister and schoolmaster, known as a historian of Tyneside and author. His main interest was in the history of Britain, in particular North East England and more specifically Roman Britain and Hadrian's Wall. This book is a guide to the Roman Wall, also known as Hadrian's Wall or Picts' Wall, the defensive fortification of the Roman province of Britannia, begun in AD 122 in the reign of the Emperor Hadrian, and running from Wallsend on the River Tyne in the east to Bowness-on-Solway in the west. The book is bound in the original thin green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and a gold stamped illustration on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear on the boards and a small faint stain on the front board. The spine ends are bumped and there are a few light dents on the top and fore edges of the front board and fore edge of the rear board. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription.
