Some edge wear to boards, including head and tail of spine; otherwise a very good clean copy. Illustrated by 16 pages of black and white photographic plates and by genealogical table. The founder was Thomas Henry Huxley (1816-87), distinguished scientist, biologist and anthropologist, and a strong supporter of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. He himself had taken part in a similar voyage of scientific exploration to Darwin's, aboard the Rattlesnake in the southern hemisphere, 1846-50, studying marine invertebrates. The other two notable Huxleys were the two grandsons of Thomas Henry, Julian (1882-1975), the biologist, and the writer, Aldous (1894-1963), author of Brave New World (1932).
