Hélène (Un Page D Amour) A Love Episode. by Émile Zola, T.B. Peterson & Brothers, Philadelphia, 1880, 334 pp plus publisher s list, yellow cloth, 7 x 5.75 , 12mo. In fair condition. Boards are quite soiled with moderate scuffing to edges and corners. Surface of cloth pitted from wear, spine abraded and fragile. Small holes at base of spine with rounded/crushed end bands. Gilt and black decoration remains clear. Inner hinge tender, binding shaken overall. Brown end papers slightly soiled with chipped edges. Interior lightly toned with scattered age-staining. Free of known markings or ownership. A small pink slip with a name dated 1882 is tucked inside. has not left any offsetting. Please see photos. Quite scarce, none comparable! Early American edition of Zola s Rougon-Macquart series, the eighth novel presented. The central character of the novel is Hélène Grandjean 'née' Mouret (b. 1824), first introduced briefly in 'La fortune des Rougon'. Hélène is the daughter of Ursule Mouret 'née' Macquart, the illegitimate daughter of Adelaïde Fouque (Tante Dide), the ancestress of the Rougon-Macquart family.
