About this Item
Chromolithograph after a painting at Kew by the British artist and explorer Thomas Baines (1820 - 1875) one of the first white men to see Victoria Falls. Baines is noted for his work as official artist to the Gregory expedition across northern Australia and for his depictions of Victoria Falls on the Livingstone Zambesi expedition. In 1855, Baines joined Augustus Gregory's Royal Geographical Society sponsored expedition across northern Australia as its official artist, with the aim of exploring the Victoria River district and examining northern Australia for its suitability for colonial development. He next worked as the artist for the 1858 Zambezi expedition led by David Livingstone, the first European to see Victoria Falls. Baines painted many views of the Falls and the surrounding area, however he was dismissed on a false charge of stealing provisions, and forced to quit the expedition for Cape Town. His paintings were left behind, and Livingstone never credited him for the illustrations which appeared in his official narrative of the expedition. The image here shows 3 large palm like trees with stilt-like roots like mangroves, and 3 men below. 4 1/2 x 7" image on 5 1/4 x 8 1/4". Seller Inventory # 21731
