About this Item
8vo, 270 pp, in a beautiful binding of paper over boards, the paper printed with a floral pattern, and titled in gilt on a red morocco spine label. A beautiful edition of Lee's final collection of essays on place, describing out of the way places in Italy and France and concluding with a meditation on the destruction that the war had brought. Her best book, and the one in which her queer proto-psycheographical leanings are most explored. Edith Wharton wrote that this book "lets me most smoothly and swiftly into those magic gardens of yours the delight of my walks there makes me wish more than ever that I could have shown you some of our beauties - you would have given them that light that never was, so they wd not hav died when my eyes close on them." [Quoted in Colby, p. 187.] Binding rubbed and bumped at extremities, but a sound, very good example, clean and bright within. Seller Inventory # 31549
