[2] half title, [2] Frontice illustrated with full-page colour illustration; vii-xii; French half-tite; pp.3-205; limitation page. Cloth boards, with pasted paper covers. Brown cloth spine with gold author, title design and publisher. Housed in tan slipcase. A story of the French Revolution, originally published in French, "les Dieux Sont Soif". The title is rumoured to have been taken from an Aztec treatise on the necessity of human sacrifice but it is better known from Le Vieux Condelier (Camille Desmoulins) which criticized the Jacobins, a key figure in this story. Anatole France (1844-1924) was a French poet, journalist and novelist. France won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1921 and was a member of the Académie Française.
