About this Item
1867 is on the copyright page. No date is on the title page. But because it was copyrighted in 1867 by Graves & Young, I don't believe the book I have here for sale is a first edition. It is rare, quite rare, as are many other of his early titles, a few of which are very expensive. The author, Warren Ives Bradley (27 March 1847 - 15 June 1868) was an author of children's books. He died at the age of 21 in Bristol, Connecticut. Despite his early death, he had written fifteen books, and numerous articles for papers and magazines. His papers are at the Sterling Memorial Library, Yale. You can see the covers in the photos provided. They are blue with a gilt design on the front and spine. The gilt and blue lettering on the spine is still quite legible. There is fraying and slight losses at the spine ends. There is a 1/2 inch area of rub-through at the front bottom corner, less at the other three corners. A spot of the same on the bottom edge of the rear cover. The spine is slanted forward. There is a crack at the gutter between the rear inside cover and rear end paper. The rear cover has a little give there but is otherwise solidly bound. There are about 10 junctures between facing pages in the book where there is a space/crack. However, none of these pages are loose. There aren't any detached pages in the book. It doesn't feel like there will be. There are occasional instances of soiling, mostly like a light smudge from a fingerprint, mostly in the margins. I saw perhaps five small edge tears. I didn't see any loss. There's a vertical crease on the title page. There aren't any markings. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. There are two illustrations, the frontispiece and one full-page black-and-white one between pages 224 and 225. There isn't any foxing in the book. That should give you a good idea of the condition.
