About this Item
Princeton Univerity Press, 1995, first edition; 8vo, pp xiii, [ii], 271; black cloth, titled in silver and red on the spine; front fly with a label neatly obscuring some writing and with traces of that writing evident below, a few minor pencilled notes in the text, but otherwise a very good copy in a near fine dust wrapper; double page map showig the distribution of Protestants and Catholics in the German Empire, 1890, and with some tables in the text. . . . . . . This is a social, cultural and political account of the situation in the period cited where although there was political unification the country was deeply divided along religious lines. This, Smith argues, eants that Protestants and Catholics lived in different worlds separated by an invisible boundary of culture and as these two worlds came into contact they also come into conflict and this affected the matters of nationalism and of nation-building.
