About this Item
Mexican war: ALS 5/5/1848, George B. McClellan (1826-1885), Mexico city, and affectionate personal letter to his close friend, fellow West Point engineer and Mexican war soldier John G. Foster (1823-1874). Foster suffered a severe hip wound on the outskirts of Mexico City at the battle of Molina Del Rey (9/8/1847), and was sent home to recuperate for several months in New Hampshire. This letter was written after the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (2/8/1848), but prior to Mexican government ratification (5/18/1848), which officially ended the Mexican American war, though the treaty would not be formally proclaimed until 7/4/1848.
