About this Item
1901. Reprint. [v], 373pp. Ethel Lilian Voynich, née Boole (1864-1960) was an Irish-born novelist and musician, and a supporter of several revolutionary causes. She was born in Cork, but grew up in Lancashire, England, and was a significant figure, not only on the late Victorian literary scene, but also in Russian émigré circles. The Gadfly is a novel that was first published in 1897. It is set in 1840s Italy under the dominance of Austria, a time of tumultuous revolt and uprisings. The story centres on the life of the protagonist, Arthur Burton. A thread of a tragic relationship between Arthur and his love, Gemma, simultaneously runs through the story. It is a tale of faith, disillusionment, revolution, romance, and heroism. The book is bound in the red cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and front board and a black, red and white design on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling on the boards and fading to the spine. The rear board has a faint water stain along the top and spine edges. The spine ends are bumped with some damage and a little loss to the cloth at the bottom of the spine. The bottom front corner is heavily bumped and there is lighter bumping to the rear corners. The contents are tight and clean with browning to the free endpapers and a name and date (1904) has been written on the top of page 1. Seller Inventory # gLitVoynich01
