no.12 of a limited edition (see details below), 20 x 14½ inches, 10 colour plates by Hannah Millard each with its own description, xi pages of a new introduction + (iii) pages of the preface to the original, top edges gilt, cloth covered boards with morocco spine, marbled endpapers, slip-case slightly worn at the corners, there is a note in pencil in the publisher's hand on the final blank that "This is the last copy from my inventory. One personal copy is being bound for me." NOTE 1:- The folio Windle edition, originally planned to be limited to 300 copies for sale (100 bound and 200 loose in a portfolio) and 10 hors commerce was, in fact, never completed. Only 25 were bound and 40 in portfolio. A quarto edition was published elsewhere later. The original edition, published by Edward Bosqui in 1877, is itself very scarce. It is believed to have been a small edition and that few complete sets were assembled. Of those, a significant proportion seem to have been lost or irreparably damaged in the earthquake of April 1906. As John Windle, the publisher of the 1980 edition, states on the limitation page, he examined every known copy in the United States. Of these 14 copies, 8 were damaged, stained, foxed or imperfect.
