FIRST EDITION. Oblong 4to. 11 x 8.5 inches. 64 pp. Publisher's advertisement on verso of first free endpaper. Bound in original stiff card with cloth spine and pictorial front board. Decorated green endpapers. Extremities a little worn and small closed tears to lower margins of pp. of several leaves not affecting image or text. These have been professionally repaired; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 31 chromolithograph plates, including title page and by other drawings in text. The US born English cartoonist, Florence Kate Upton (1872-1922) found inspiration for her Golliwogg books in penny wooden dolls and an old toy found in her attic. The thirteen Golliwogg adventures were published 1895-1909 and the verses were written by her mother, Bertha (1849-1912).
