Latham, Robert Gordon (1812?1888), ethnologist and philologist, was born on at Billingborough, Lincolnshire. He was one of the most eminent of modern philologers and ethnologists, educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge. In 1833 he visited Hamburg and Copenhagen, and then went North to study languages in Norway, the result being the publication of the book offered here, and his charming Norway and the Norwegians published in 1840. He wrote and number of other works including a major new edition (1866?70) of Dr Johnson's Dictionary. Latham's most significant work was new edition (1866?70) of The ?Hamlet? of Saxo Grammaticus and of Shakespeare (1872) which is the work he is probably best remembered for.
