About this Item
FIRST EDITION. 12mo, 153 x 93 mms., pp. iv, 157 [158 blank, 159 adverts, 160 blank] , contemporary tree calf, gilt rules on spine, gilt spine, red leather label; front joint slightly rubbed, corners a bit worn, but a good copy. The poet and translator John Langhore (1735 - 1779) published a respectable and frequently reprinted translation of Plutarch in 1770 and published a total of 30 works in his short life. Given that he wrote a number of reviews for The Monthly Review, its review of this work in 1769 was rather snippy, e. g., "Dr. Langhorne has attempted to console mankind upon principles of philosophy as well as religion, but he does not appear to have succeeded better. He had endeavoured to prove that God intended to make man happy, and therefore he is so; he now endeavours to convince man that his existence is worth nothing, and that therefore he should received what we call good and evil with equal indifference.".
