About this Item
Four travel sketches, one in color, made by American traveler and author, John B. Ireland, author of: " Wall-Street to Cashmere: A journal of five years in Asia, Africa, and Europe with the scenes of the recent mutinies (Benares, Agra, Cawnpore, Lucknow, Delhi, [India]); the Khyber Pass to Afganistan, Java, China, and Mauritius", 1859, and the second edition in 1860. [1] Sketch, colored with watercolors: 4 3/4 inches x 7 1/4, titled in ink: Joseph my Palmyra Dragoman Nov 28 [18]52; this shows a seated male figure in Near Eastern dress, in an interior, with a portion of another facial sketch present in the upper right. [2] Pencil sketch: 4 3/3 in. x 7 1/2 in., titled: Batavia Water Carrier or Cooley Sep 8th [18]53, this shows a male figure with water carrying equipment; on the reverse in pencil: Java Cooley [crossed through], China boat man, Java Watering Streets, Java Coachman & another: Sandilla Cuffs Chief [?]. [3] Pencil sketch: 4 4/3 in. x 7 1/2 in., titled: likeness of a boy at Ptah [?] Galli [?] May 21. [18]53. (very correct) [?], standing male figure in costume. [4] Pencil sketch, 3 1/2 in. x 6 1/8 in., two partial facial sketches, the first, titled: Turk on board Austrian Steamer Nov /[18]52, male head with head wear, and a smaller, lighter facial sketch. The sheet edges show some light creasing, age-related tanning. These sketches, which appear to have been made on the spot, were among many others that were later (1859), used as the basis for the illustrations in his "Wall Street to Cashmere" book. Few other of these earlier or trial sketches seemed to have survived. From the collection of Cleveland, Ohio based book collector and world traveler, William G. Mather (1857-1951), who had a connection to the Cleveland, Ohio Ireland family. Sold together only, as a group of 4 sketches. Seller Inventory # M-521
