About this Item
Puzzle Map. 1932. Measures 10 x 6.5 inches. This unusual 1932 jigsaw puzzle map of the 'Flying Family' depicts the western United States. Issued by the R. B. Davis Co. from Hoboken, New Jersey, the 65 piece puzzle features amusing vignettes of scenes relevant to the individual states, including images of Mexican banditos firing pistols at each other and a skier in Canada. The central image features the famous Hutchinson Family, the aviation celebrities of the time. The entire family, along with their pet lion cub flew to the capitals of the 48 United States with goodwill messages from the President of the United States to the governors of the 48 states. Colonel Hutchinson, his wife Blanche, their two daughters Kathryn and Janet Lee and their lion cup mascot "Sunshine" are all featured in the image. The route of their flight is also noted. The puzzle, issued in conjuncture with the tour, is sponsored by "Cocomalt", an enriched milk ' food' drink. The text on the map mentions how much the family depends of Cocomalt for sustenance during their thrilling flights. The puzzle is accompanied by the original brown paper envelope which announces the promotion of the Flying Family 65-piece jig-saw puzzle free with every can of Cocomalt. The puzzle is in very good condition with all pieces intact. The accompanying envelope has been trimmed at the edges and exhibits some creasing. First made in London in the late 18th century, puzzle maps soon became popular in Europe as an educational tool and the United States. They are known for their whimsical themes and were used widely as an advertising device. Seller Inventory # 267289
