About this Item
This critical work on the influential novelist and critic, Floyd Dell, was one of the earliest studies of his novels. The following are excerpts from the dust-jacket blurb : "This study analyzes for the first time Floyd Dell's novels and relates them to his life and thought; it aims to be a general survey of the life and writings of Dell (1887 - 1969), American social and political radical, bohemian, critic and novelist, who at the age of twenty-nine became associate editor and then editor of Chicago's brilliant literary magazine, the 'Chicago Evening Post Friday Literary Review'. In his editorial capacity Dell not only helped to stimulate an interest in the arts, but to shape opinions and attitudes toward the new literary writers and changing social values. ********************************************* "Important, not only in the Chicago Revival, Dell went to New York, where his editorial work on 'The Masses' and 'The Liberator' magazines, his book reviews, and his political and social essays, were a significant expression of radical thinking before the First World War. Friend of Max Eastman and Edna St. Vincent Millay, of Theodore Dreiser and Sherwood Anderson, and many others, Dell himself was one of the most colorful and charming citizens of Greenwich Village. His novels are fine psychological studies of individuals in rebellion against the bigotry and cant of conventional society." *************************************************** SERIES : Twayne's United States Authors Series ( TUSAS 184) / TITLE : Floyd Dell.
