[Author's 1954 foreword]: "In this 1954 reprinting, a few explanatory items have been added in an appendix at the end of the book. These are indicated by stars in the text. With a few exceptions all the photographs were taken by either my father or myself. It is not a history as such but is historical inasmuch as the illustrations are authentic pictures of people and places at the turn of the Century. Many books have been written of the acquiring and settling of Florida, its inhabitants at that time, and the hunting and fishing to be found there. This chronicle is a personal description of the life my family experienced in the southwestern part of the state during the years between 1887 and 1910, and as one man recently expressed it, might have been entitled 'Florida's Vanished Era.'
