Second issue. In publisher's original dark brown cloth binding with gilt spine titles. Spine slightly slanted. Binding rubbed to both ends of spine and all corners with small loss of cloth. Text is clean - no previous owner marks, and either no age spotting at all, or minimal (I couldn't find any). A nice and clean book. Thomas North spent January, 1861- January, 1866 traveling and living in Texas and Mexico. He spent the vast majority of the time in Texas and only went to Mexico to avoid being conscripted into the Confederate Army near the end of the Civil War. This is Thomas' narrative of those years and he had an exciting time. As a "Damned Yankee" living in Texas during the Civil War, he was badly beat up at least once, and spent a decent amount of time making sure he didn't end up in the Confederate Army - apparently one of the favorite tricks of Texans was to force Yankees into the army and the front lines. Thomas writes about many of the famous men of the era as well as about a bunch of local judges, sherrifs and generals. He also writes about his own life and the constant danger he felt. Thomas was a minister who also owned a store while in Texas and made a decent amount of money (a massive sore point for the local Texans) , nearly all of which he lost when he fled to Mexico. Thomas was in Galveston, Brenham, Austin, San Antonio, and New Braunfels, as well as West Texas. As a northerner, Thomas' views of the Civil War were straightforward - it was a war about slavery and the poor died in it while the rich did not. He felt that way, in part, because all slaveholders holding at least 15 slaves were exempt from serving in the war. As were practising ministers (which is why Thomas was a minister - he knew the loopholes about army service well).
