About this Item
(price-clipped) [good solid book, minor wear at base of spine, vintage bookplate on front pastedown; jacket missing a one-inch triangular chunk at top of spine, otherwise just lightly edgeworn]. A somewhat deceptive anthology of "contemporary" one-acters -- although the copyright page states "First Published January 1946," it's actually a reprint of a collection originally published in 1920, and while admirably international in scope (16 countries are represented) it was also a bit antiquated given the then-current state of stage drama. Space prohibits listing the full contents, but since 29 of the 50 plays are either American or British I'm just going to be anti-chauvinist and list all the ones that aren't: "Madonna Dianora" (Hugo von Hoffmansthal); "Literature" (Arthur Schnitzler); "The Intruder" (Maurice Maeterlinck); "Interlude" (Federico More); "Monsieur Lamblin" (Georges Ancey); "Françoise' Luck" (Georges de Porto-Riche); "Altruism" (Karl Ettlinger); "The Tenor" (Frank Wedekind); "The Judgment of Indra" (Dhan Gopal Mukerji); "The Workhouse Ward" (Lady Gregory); "Louise" (J.H. Speenhoff); "The Grandmother" (Lajos Biro); "The Rights of the Soul" (Giuseppe Giacosa); "Love of One's Neighbor" (Leonid Andreyev); "The Boor" (Anton Tchekoff (Chekhov)); "His Widow's Husband" (Jacinto Benavente); "A Sunny Morning" (The Quinteros); "The Creditor" (August Strindberg); "Autumn Fires" (Gustav Wied); "Night" (Sholem Asch); "Forgotten Souls" (David Pinski). OK, room for a couple of the more interesting American ones: "In the Morgue" (Sada Cowan); "Trifles" (Susan Glaspell); "Aria Da Capo" (Edna St. Vincent Millay); "Ile" (Eugene O'Neill); "Three Travelers Watch a Sunrise" (Wallace Stevens).
